What does thorfinn expect? To allow his enemies to beat him to death in trade for freedom? WTF

I've read ahead in manga so I can tell you already that the series' creator talks out of his ass most of the time and just makes characters say all these weird principles for dramatic effect that 100% wouldn't work in reality
